St Tudy Community Shop
Photographs:
The previous village shop closed on Thursday 21st April 2011. An enormous amount of enthusiasm and activity resulted in the new community shop opening the next day on Good Friday, 22nd April. The existing premises are being used on a six-month lease and the Post Office will be retained. At the end of this period the new site for the Community Shop will be adjacent to St Tudy Village Hall. A log cabin style building, with Post Office Local included, is proposed together with a small coffee shop.
There is no shortage of volunteers to help run the enterprise. Plans and rotas were drawn up, stock was sorted, supplies arranged and in house training provided! It's a very exciting time for the whole village after a distressing few weeks of imagining the potential loss to their community of such a vital lifeline.
For most villages the PO and Shop is a vital lifeline and for some people, especially the very elderly and those without transport, it provides an even more important service. It is a meeting place, communications centre and an important lynchpin of village life. Also for St Tudy the nearest alternative shop involves a minimum of a five mile round trip.
Much of the appeal of our village rests on its sense of community. Not only have many families of villagers lived here for generations but it is the reason many others have moved here and remain here. The presence of a PO and Shop greatly enhances that community spirit and helps to make St Tudy one of the most desirable places to live in this part of Cornwall.
