Community opens own village shop
A Nottinghamshire community has become one of the first in the country to run its own village shop.
The store in Elston near Newark closed about seven years ago. It will now be staffed by volunteers and will include a café and internet access.
Project bosses hope to sell a range of local produce.
Chris Fitzpatrick, from the county''s rural community Council, said: "Across the country (local shops) are closing down at a rate of 200 a year."
He added: "When they close down, it''s a significant impact on the community because rural transport has declined over the years and people find it very difficult to get out and do their shopping."
