Yarpole, a small village in Herefordshire, became the first community to save much-needed facilties by opening up shop in their local church.

Villagers in Great Milton, Oxfordshire, have celebrated the takeover of their last remaining village pub. Around 300 residents, nearly half the village’s population, joined with local celebrity chef Raymond Blanc to mark the occasion.

For the last 25 years, villagers in North Marston, Buckinghamshire, have had to travel over nine miles to the nearest shop for even the most basic of provisions.

Nenthead is a small and isolated community in the Northern Pennines and at 1,500 feet is England’s highest village. Originally a mining community, Nenthead once had a series of shops and services to support the workers and their families.

Milland Stores & Café in West Sussex is a community shop that opened in December 2011, and is worthy of note for several reasons.

On February 8th 2011, Dunsfold Village Stores and Post Office was successfully bought by the inhabitants of the village.

The village of Leverburgh lies at the south end of the Isle of Harris and has a population of around 200.

Brockweir & Hewelsfield Village Shop & Cafe is a custom-built eco-building set in the Forest of Dean. In 2012 it won the BBC Radio 4 Food & Farming Award for best village shop.
